Sun and light, Tone and colour

This is the library shown in 3 different light intensities to show how weather and sunlight can have an effect on mood and tone of a building

Sun and light, Tone and colour

With this image i have tried to show tonal range of different materials along the route to try and get a understanding of the colour of materials in different conditions

Sketches

Old portsmouth in my opinion is summed up by the idea of the ravelin. This page shows the libary and the route and in my opinion the libary, as a building, shows the true identity of portsmouth old and new

Exhibition Progress

Production and development of the presentation material representing the key ideas discussed within the studio. Focusing on the meaning of Tension and its relation to the route, the importance and dominance of materials and textures created through the development and expansion of Portsmouth as a city, the representation of boundaries and edges perceived by the sea front and the nodes of open spaces; and the experience of compression and expansion discovered whilst walking the route.

Sounds and Smells

The sounds and smells on the route are very different. It depends on the area.

For example Ravelin Park was a quiet place with very natural smells. There were just people chating, birds singing...completely harmonic.

As we got out of the park,it got noisy because of the traffic and the air smelled as car fumes.Workers and people were making noise everywhere. It shows that this area is active and populated. This continues on the narrow streets.

A bit later,we reached the wide, green space where we found the Garrison Church. This area was very quiet and relaxing. There were some kids playing soccer and shouting on the field. The whole place was quite misterious.Silence combined with shouts, wispers, chats, wind blowing through the leaves.

At the seafront,we could hear a helicopter flying by and the boat engines. You could hear the waves splashing through the rocks and the wind brought the smell of sea towards the land.there was a complete harmony.

When we reached the arcades,we could suddenly hear slot machines and loud commercial music, which sounded quite superficial. The smell of food reached us and we could hear people chating while eating.

So we experienced a wide variety of sounds and smells as we walked by.

Found Objects

These are the objects that I found along the routes which I collected and put it together as a collage.

Top left – Leafs from the outside of Portsmouth Grammar School.

Top right – Bottle top, paper flyer and plastic bag founded on High St.

Bottom left – Stones, shells, pebbles, woods and seaweed from the beach, Clarence Pier areas.

Bottom right – Lavender leafs and flowers from the outside of St. Garrison Church.

Activities

The route is complex in activities.I've seen people doing different things, like jogging, cycling, fishing, just walking or relaxing. Most of them are visiting the places.Old Portsmouth is the best place to be for historical interest. So related to the activities,
I think the word tension is innapropriate.Although, tension is in the air, looking at the events that occured here and all the historical background.

Serial Sketches

These are the serial sketches I took of our walk along the route. I have also added some brief notes with some basic analysis of the sketches.
